One of the questions I get asked the most is how I style shelves.

Let me tell you that shelf styling is a bit of an art form, and doesn’t always come easy. But I think with practice and the right elements it can be one of my very favorite parts of decorating! Here are the steps I take to style shelves…

S T E P  O N E

Start with the base – books and a few key larger objects.  A few “anchor objects” like large boxes or bowls are also good to start with to ground the styling.

Add height – I usually do this through frames and artwork. You could also use things like trays and platters to give some height and weight to your shelves.

Add organic elements and texture – Things like natural wood, driftwood and coral work well.

Add interest with objects and vases. Look for things with a sculptural quality – vases with an interesting shape, geometric pieces and small sculptures all work well.

Add “green! A few pops of green make all the difference in bringing your shelves to life. Small orchids, succulents and ferns, or even moss balls, are perfect to bring in a big of nature.

If shelf styling still seems like a bit of a mystery, there are some basic elements you can combine to achieve gorgeous shelves every time. No matter your style, finding these categories of items in your preferred color palette or decorating style always makes perfectly pulled together shelves. My go-tos: Boxes, objects, frames, botanicals, vases and bowls. Here are some examples I pulled from different sites. Just choose one or two from each category and your shelves will look like a stylist has done it!

I know what it’s like to stand at the door of a room and think, “We need to do something. What are we going to do with all of this stuff?”

The answer is to get organized and start decluttering.

But how? Where do I start? I’m sure you are thinking…We don’t have enough space. We have to invest in organization systems. The kids needs so much stuff.

Just Stop. Just stop with the excuses and get going already. Harsh but true.

Your home should be a comfortable place for you and your family. A place of rest.

So take the first steps for dealing with the mess. I promise once you start the work it will be worth it. Once you get over this hurdle you will be able to have a consistently clean home.

First, get rid of your junk and then you will organize what is left.

I myself try to make do with the space we have and if things don’t fit I get rid of something. This is a skill I have learned after a few years of decluttering my home.

This may seem like an impossible idea for you, but I bet you find a whole new you once you have this mess cleaned up.

Be ruthless and get rid of anything that you don’t use or love. Touch every single item in your home and decide to love it or leave it.

Just start with one item and then move to the next… and the next… and the next.

Decluttering is THE key to a clean home. You don’t need to be a minimalist to declutter. Having less means cleaning less. When you declutter your home, it is almost like magic. You suddenly have more time because you are not constantly picking things up.

After your whole house is decluttered (Yay!), you will want to start a cleaning routine. This is what is going to help you stay on top of things, and never let your house get like that again.

After everything is said and done, you can put organization systems into place. Plus, You will find when things are aesthetically pleasing you are more likely to keep them picked up and in their place.

I linked a general selections of containers and boxes that are helpful for almost every space in your home. Hope you find them helpful
